A fitness-for-work assessment helps determine whether an employee is medically able to safely perform the essential duties of their role following an illness, injury, surgery, or other change in health status.

Assessments are tailored to the specific situation and may include:

• Focused medical examination and health history review
• Assessment following injury, illness, or workplace exposure
• Review of medications or new medical diagnoses
• Functional evaluation based on job requirements
• Diagnostic testing, referral to specialists and independent medical examiners, where appropriate

Findings are translated into clear, practical recommendations to support next steps for both the employer and employee.

What are fitness-for-work assessments?

When an assessment is requested, our clinical team reviews the individual’s current health status in relation to the physical and cognitive demands of their role.

This includes medical evaluation, relevant testing where required, and clinical interpretation. The goal is to provide a clear, objective opinion to support safe and informed workplace decisions. 

What will I receive?

Following the assessment, you will receive a clear fitness-for-work determination. Outcomes are typically reported as:

• Fit for work
• Fit for work with restrictions
• Temporarily not fit for work

Where appropriate, recommendations may also include timelines for reassessment or next steps in return-to-work planning.
